I ran the R1 for the last year, it’s been out with me on multiple trips. Kinda hard to leave home without it once you have it. The R1 packs down in the drawer system of my 4Runner. Pumps enough heat to keep a small circle of 3-4 warm… but the new R3 features the R4 barcoal and pumps even more heat… specifically out the sides of the unit, whereas the R1 gets its heat from the top only. Both are great units but after testing the R3 this weekend, and still being able to fit this new unit in a drawer system… leaning on the R3 being the clear winner.
