My plan was to preemptively seal my roof with this stuff, and alas, my camper has fallen victim to the dreaded leak in the tent. I immediately Amazonned (ya i made that up, you saw it here first) some for next day delivery. You only need half the roll to do do a whole camper. So to anybody in the Cleveland area or passing through who would like to pick up, you are more than welcome to the other half of the roll. I will not ship or take any internet payments, just hand over to the next guy only.
On a side note: after getting up close and personal to the roof, the honeycomb has a “grain” to the surface. My working theory is water finds its way into the extrusion and funnels to a corner and drips in the tent. we’ll see if this helps and backs up my theory.
Install: it’s tape. Very VERY VERY sticky tape. If you can’t figure it out…
I just sealed up the seam where the honeycomb and extrusion meet. This stuff is sticky. I had the roll sitting on the roof, on its edge and it got bumped over. I had to use a putty knife to chisel it off.
The roof is “free-floating” in the the channel of the extrusion so if it expands and contracts, the caulking or sealant could crack over time. Second reason is that there just isn’t enough of the extrusion for the sealant to adhere to. The tape covers the joint ~1" on either side and can expand/contract with less of a chance of the seal breaking. That’s my reasoning and any differing view points are welcome to try and fix this issue.
I’m still waiting on support to respond but the rainy season is upon us in Seattle. I was hoping to get an official set of instructions (and hopefully some supplies) to fix a problem a new tent shouldn’t have. Guess I’ll have to take advantage of whatever the next dry window in Seattle is to do this.
good luck with that. how long did it take to fix the hinges? I’m impressed with the PIT and replacing all those old hinges but it took too long for a solution
I’ll play with the hose in the morning to see if it leaks. next is to seal the gap on the sides. 1 step at a time to see what works
I don’t think the gaps on the roof are part of the design. 3 corners on mine are tight and back driver side has a gap but doesn’t leak that I know of
dont wait for gfc to respond they took well over a month to get back to me with no solution and still arent doing anything about the leaks you are better off figuring it out yourself that is what im resulting to
So… today we have a warmish sunnyish (for November) day in the Cleveburg.
I wanted to test the sealing of the roof. On mostly level driveway:
Remove cushion in the tent
close tent
make swimming pool on the roof
check for leaks while top is down
At this point everything was nice and dry inside so I figured it’s gravy
pop the top
I did this while still in the bed, looking at the front of the camper, into the empty AND dry overhang when the water started pouring in. After further inspection it came from the very top corner where the 2 extrusions meet with the roof. It looks like it came from the honeycomb/aluminum joint which would further prove my earlier theory about 2 hard surfaces don’t make a good seal. What’s really got me annoyed is the pool of water then disappeared into the joint between the floor and frame. Where’d it go? who knows
further testing… while the top is up, I doused the hinge, roof, and the especially that gap with high pressure from the hose and not a drop got through to the tent. I got soaked but tent is fine
after a little staring… make the gap wider. hear me out before judging. mill a groove into the end of the hinge to hold a piece of rubber to seal that joint. that would make a tight fit and move with the hinge. you would need to disassemble the top frame but that’s the fun of it. downside is maintenance lubing it up every now and then
Yup. Whenever it stops raining I briefly run up and check to see how much water is inside. I don’t keep the mattress inside anymore. I’m ordering some eternabond and will apply along some of the edges but based on the above update… Idk what to do. The entire front edge of the tent is near impossible to access unless I create a platform for the roof of the tent to sit on. It’s so high off the ground troubleshooting and patching is challenging.
Selling it (or trying to) has started to cross my mind.
