Aug 4th, picked up my new GFC Max in Montana

Got to spend my first and second night in the Max, out in the mountains of Northern Idaho. The Max is amazing! I am loving the extra space in it. The upgraded mattress compared to the one that was in my previous V2 was a night and day difference. I still may look into getting an inflatable mattress, just to be able to keep all of my bedding up there ready to go. I know they come with the storage nook, but you’ll see in the post below why I can’t use it to store bedding.

My very first mod done to the Max… a 25" pass through.
When I ordered the Max, the idea of the constant pass through is what sold me. But the pass through size got me thinking… I need it bigger. The 25" open space in the V2 worked great for me as far as getting my dog up and down from the bed, also just being able to stand up and change clothing. But the downside with the V2 was having to move the panels to do that. So after ordering the Max, I got measurements from whoever was willing to share, and I found if I would get the removable long panel from a V2, and put that in place of the one for the Max, it would give me that 25" constant pass through. So with a little bit of luck on my side, I was able to do that. It does leave about a 7" storage nook still, which I am completely fine with. And the 2 smaller removable panels that come with the Max still fit with the larger passthrough, just have to turn them long ways, which helps keep the tent up and out of the way when closed.
Ceiling storage… I went on Roam’s website and they had some of their lid organizers on clearance. The one I got is the same measurements as the ones sold with GFC, so I went ahead and ordered it. Using strips of velcro and some Gorilla Glue, I was able to make it work. The tent closes just fine with it up there also.
And as you can see in the other pictures, I had another drawer made. This time, it is the full length of the bed, which gives me a crazy amount of drawer space.
What’s to come for the bed build, I am not sure of yet. I will be spending a lot of time figuring some things out and how I want it all laid out. So stay tuned!

Question: Didn’t you switch to something else after your original GFC? If so, what was it and why the switch back to GFC?
Also, this is the first Max I have seen that looks good on a mid-size truck. It may be because your truck is black which makes me wonder about getting a Max to replace my V2…

I sold my other Tacoma and GFC to build out a van. Had the van for a year and just wasn’t feeling it, I missed the GFC. That was around the time the Max came out, and thats what I landed on. The Max had everything I would have changed about the V2. I’ve had every set up you can think of, and the GFC has been the perfect set up for me. I also looked at Tune and FWC, but I didn’t care for the weight of those. GFC just checks every box, especially now with the constant pass through.
I highly recommend going with the Max. I think having the cut down roof rack with the light bar ties it in all together. So find you a used roof rack, cut it down, and get a light bar off of Amazon like I did. I am pretty happen with that light bar, and spend $175 instead of $1400 for a Baja Designs lol

You’re 100% correct on the roof rack, in my opinion. It keeps the camper from looking like a peninsula over the roof. To confirm, you modified one to fit? This isn’t a product you bought somewhere?

It’s a Martin Offroad roof rack that I cut. I’ll snap some better pictures later.
I’ve been thinking about extending the standing room without really affecting the sleeping space, and had been planning on doing something similar. It’s nice that the Max’s panels would fit when rotated 90 degrees - that solves a couple problems. Where did you source the extra mid-size pickup panel for the V2? I’m guessing you’re using the Max’s mattresses, and just sliding them down a bit.
Today I finished a simple shelf that I tied into the drawer. Nothing fancy, but I will have my Bluetti mounted up on there, as well as just having a flat surface off of the floor to charge things, or to cook on if needed. Shelf surface is about 13".5" deep. Also just wanted a little cubby to stash a front runner case.

Yeah, im still using the Max mattress, just slide it forward. Leaves around 7" of space where I stuffed a blanket. As far as the panel, lucked out and got it from GFC.
