Yep, GFC brackets I have 3 but I guess they recommend 4 now. 3 seems adequate but I may add a 4th one day.
Interesting new lightweight 270 awning with carbon fiber arms, from Roofnest. Price is actually decentā¦
I wonder if it is going to be āfree-standingā. I might order one and not have to rely on a custom bracket.
I was looking at these yesterday too. Seems like it will technically be freestanding, with built in poles for added stability. I couldnāt quite find more detailed specs around conditions where the poles would be recommended.
I have the OVSā¦. The poles take literally 5 seconds to deployā¦ā¦ in no wind, I leave it freestanding without any issues but I just deploy the poles because why notā¦
Greetings! Iām going with the Slumberjack. Cost is the primary reason (I actually got mine with CC points) but Iām also keen on keeping GVW to a minimum. Too, the SJ is highly configurable compared to the static variants. All of that being said, there is a lot to be said for how quickly some of the mounted awnings can be deployed and stowed!
I have the Slumberjack and a FSR 270. Both are awesome and serve different needs, but the slumberjack is amazing if you are staying in one spot for a bit.
Definitely looking forward to seeing the build quality. I lean toward keeping things light when possible but donāt want to sacrifice too much durability,
After seeing an OVS in person - the Alu-Cab quality is night and day better.
If you want size - go for OVS. If you want simple and sturdy go for Alu-Cab.
I just sold my GFC so Iāve got no dog in this fight. Just telling you my opinion.
Are you still running the Hasika awning? Thoughts, a year later?
was using it on my last trip. Iāve decided to replace it with a Kelty Backroads shelter. Iāve just ordered it and it has yet to arrive, but it might be long enough so that it wonāt hit the swing out. It would be nice if I could set it up as pictured but I have some good retractable poles (Green Elephant) that I will use to lift the end up like the Haskia. The aluminum poles with the Hasika were garbage, but other than that, the thin fiberglass poles that give the awning shape worked well. The plastic clips were a bit hard to get on them at first but I got better at putting them on. Iām planning on putting the Haskia on craigslist if you are interested. $35 and shipping but remember you will have to get some poles.
Thanks for the info. I think I am going to wait to pull the trigger on an awning until I use my GFC more consistently, so I have a better idea on what would work best for me.
Terrible pictures I know. I installed the Ironman 270, I was torn between this and the OVC. I went with the Ironman due to it being slightly less weight. I used three GFC brackets, it works great, fits great, takes seconds to deploy, almost as easy to take down. The only thing that is not my favorite is the gigantic monster energy green logo on the awning cover.
The flex seal waterproof tape thatās five inches wide is a perfect color match to the bag and Iāve used it to cover up the logo on my OVS and you wouldnāt know unless you looked closely
Iāll take a look at that! Iāll need two pieces the logo is way to big!
I meant to say that itās five inches wide and 5 feet longā¦ a bit spendy but that sucker isnāt going anywhere

Well it looks great!
Hopefully I wont have all that trouble when I get mine.
After reading through the entire thread I have a couple options it seems although questions on two of them.
The ironman awning looks great but seems it would be the perfect solution if only it was off the tailgate so you could extend your living space in inclimate weather by going out the tailgate into your living room so to speak. Does anyone know of an awning with walls or room that will fit on the back end of a platform camper?
If i were to go the OVS 270 route would I still be able to use my shittco poles to keep the tent flap up or do I then lose that capability and have to leave the main tent door wide open to the elements or completely closed?
The Slumberjack looks like a really cool tall option but without walls fails to provide the covered living space when at a site for 3-6 days. I do love it for putting over the front of the truck though to keep the interior cool and avoid rain/dust/debris from landing on the vehicle when parked for extended periods of time.
Just saw the moonshade also comes with walls now. Has anyone purchased the moonshade with the walls and can report on functionality?
A ton of all over the place in the message I know but with the cost of all these awnings (Minus the slumberjack) itās really disheartening to not find a perfect solution.
