I’m new here and hoping to invest in my first camper!
Can you more experienced folks weigh in on the pros and cons of the new GFC Max versus the Super Pacific X1? They seem similar, but I’d love to hear your experiences!

Welcome to the forum. That is a tough question to answer because most of us haven’t seen a V2 Max in person. The V2 Max is just coming into the market. This coming weekend Overland Expo East in Arrington, VA will be a great place to see and speak with the staff representing both products. If you happen to be close to Virginia, it would be time well spent to attend. If you do attend, come back to the forum and share your thoughts with us.
I know your question wasn’t answered, but ultimately anyone’s response will be subjective. I am not sure I would want to spend $$ without seeing both campers in person. Best of luck!
Peace!
I would recommend seeing both campers in person. Not many have owned both a V2 and now an SP like myself. See them in person and make your own choice based on quality, build, and what features you need the most.
Yeah, I’m trying to get my eyes and hands on both to check them out. I’m in Belgrade right now, so hoping to get a look at the Max when it gets home next week. Got to take a look at a personal owner’s Super Pacific this weekend - it was nice! I’m excited to see the Max, and the GFCs in general!
The obvious answer hasn’t yet been talked about.
V2 Max as currently advertised is starting at $10,250 while the X1 starts at $13,495. So immediately you’re paying $3k more. Not debating quality and all that jazz just the simple difference at the start.
I have seen and been in a few X1’s and really like the system they’ve developed. The door latches, the molle panels, the pas through system are all nice. I am disappointed their heating option uses propane but I can understand the reasoning behind it.
If cost is the only factor then GFC wins by a mile. If you’re looking for accessories then Super Pacific wins.
A lot of it comes down to physically getting into one and seeing how you like it AND how it looks/fits on your vehicle. my short bed gladiator looks really funny with the X1 and while I’d love the pass through I would really miss having the over cab storage.
GFC Max looks like it check marks every single box that the SP does but now it does it better and cheaper. Prove me wrong. ![]()
Another aspect is weight, although the Max and X1 are closer than the V2/X1 comparison. Max still starts out lighter than the X1.
Build quality on the SP is superior to GFC. No questions about that. SP only draw backs are weight and price. SP is including a heater right now with their promotion. That’s a 3,200 value. I’d say that’s any easy choice if weight is not important and you plan to winter camp.
Also this topic has been covered so many times. If you google “SP vs GFC”. You’ll probably find a half dozen threads on this topic. You can’t go wrong either way.
In the past yeah but now GFC has all the things that the SP has but better.. Build quality is better ?, nah don’t think so . Did you see this video? Looks amazing.
Everyone’s entitled to their opinion. Like I said, can’t go wrong either way. I got a chance to check out the Max in person.
Would be sick to see GFC eventually move away from 2 locks. It’s slick being able to lock/unlock all 3 doors inside/outside with only 1 latch.
Keegan Builds is also cooking with this NFC Locking system at 29:58:
I have limited knowledge/experience on the SuperPacific but as a recent V2 Pro owner I regret not spending the extra money for an X1. But like everyone says, everyone has different needs/wants/budget so there is no correct answer. Given the differences there is not an objective better/worse option.
Before the introduction of the Max it was much easier to decide. GFC was an awesome truck cap with a great place to sleep and the SP was more of a “camper”. I do a lot of harder trails and still need to do truck things so the choice was really clear.
With the introduction of the Max it is a much less clear choice for the camper side of things. Both are exceptional quality and well designed, but the price on the SP is a bit hard to swallow for a very similar product.
For me it is GFC all the way because of the community. I think the forum is great and I have yet to meet a GFC customer out in the wild that hasn’t been cool and fun to hang out with. I can’t say the same for the SP folks…. @GainzGFC @Buhlockaye @Geojenkins don’t count as they will always be GFC folks in my eyes ![]()
All the love Josh! Honestly without your kindness and improvements for the campers, they wouldn’t have been what they are now.
Let’s just say that if GFC wasn’t early in the game, the SP, Lone Peak and others likely wouldn’t be here. They all kinda developed from what was potentially missing from one or the other. I don’t actually know who else was probably making campers back then besides maybe AluCab, Vagabond (rip), and AT Overland I’d guess? SP fixed stuff missing in the V1/V2…Lone Peak added stuff folks wanted to see in the SP, and I am guessing the Max was a response to the market shift from what folks were requesting due to Lone Peak/SP. If anything the customer, competition, and more has all led these companies to push, update, or be left behind. People still ask me about campers and comparing them - really the best route is to go to an expo and climb in all of them - SP, GFC, Tune, AluCab, Lone Peak, AT Overland, Topo Toppers etc. Truly that’s best way to determine what you need at the end of the day based on price, features, and more.
P.S. - I am mucho jelly about the positive pressure vent but ya bet your bum @Buhlockaye is already in the lab cooking.
This is my biggest gripe still to this day. I want ONE latch per door rather than 2 and if we have to have two latches then at least give us good rubber lock covers instead of plastic ones.
What particular regrets or features you wish you had on the V2 Pro?
I still hope to see the Max in person next week sometime, but here are some initial pros for each camper that I’ve been thinking about:
SP:
GFC:
I would agree with this. Sp uses a marine grade type fabric for their tent, which is more robust. They also have a thermal liner. GFC has the braces that obstruct a portion on the side panel entry, which SP does not.
Truma is not recommend for operational use below 14 degrees FYI. Excited to see GFC heater though.
I’d say it was a combination of a couple of things but most of them are build quality and customer support related. I honestly don’t need a lot of the features that the X1 has since I prefer a bit more minimalist setup (which is why I originally chose GFC).
-I paid $10k and then still had a small project in order to get the camper in normal working condition. Had to reseal leaking panels with silicone, fix locks, and install items (headliner) that weren’t available upon install.
-With the tent area empty (standard mattress and headliner) my tent bows and has a gap where the gasket seal does not make any contact. The biggest issue I have with this is that GFC would not accept this reality and insisted that the gap was due to an out of spec gasket which was not uniform. The gaslighting from support was as bad as the issue itself.
-As a side sleep the mattress isn’t great. I’m not sure if the X1 is better for this, but I’m nervous about upgrading to the Hest due to my tent not closing well currently. I did not expect to go from a ground tent to camper and have my sleep comfort decrease.
Despite this i’m still relatively happy with my GFC and would maybe rate it a B-/C+ overall.
I’m surprised to hear yours bows under those conditions. I have the standard GFC mattress, plus the OSG memory foam and sheet, and the headliner and if mine bows, I sure can’t see it. I also don’t generally have any issues closing it other than making sure nothing sticks out (the tabs for the carabiners always seem to pop out at the end).
