I camp 95% solo and bought a single side Hest mattress for sleeping. It is shorter than the frame so there is a gap as you mention. The other side is standard GFC mattress, I put my sleeping bag on that side when I close my tent and it fits well typically with no bulge. I leave the gap by the Hest near the high side of the tent empty so there is plently of room for the tent material.
