Heated Blanket / Winter Camping

My God man, you took the radical step of employing the operable vents on your camper to achieve ventilation?! Are you mad?

My low-tech set up is a 1" memory foam mattress topper from GoWesty and an Aeronaut Hoverquit; I run their included straps under the mattress topper. The straps make a huge difference, especially keeping my feet covered as Iā€™m a restless sleeper. Requires a vent open to minimize condensation. I preheat it for 5 minutes with an electric heater plugged into a Jackery so the memory foam is warm and soft when I climb in. Comfortable into the teens, havenā€™t been lower than that (yet).

I also have the Hoverquilt and love it but preheating makes a huge difference. Ive been thinking about using an electric heater as well since I got an Ecoflow to help power one for a bit just to warm things up. I have a Mr. Buddy and they just get too hot too fast and not interested in dealing with a diesel heater. What electric heater are you running?

Iā€™ll check tomorrow and let you know. Itā€™s a simple 110ac unit I got at ace hardware that had the lowest draw I could find. Donā€™t hesitate to remind me if I forget. I also turn it on in the morning to get me out from under the blankets. Power consumption is minimal.

Iā€™m going to add an Ignik flipside heated bed cover just because Iā€™m a sissy about being coldā€¦

I appreciate it! I did a quick search on Aceā€™s website and was surprised at the number of options they have lol I like that a lot of them have a timer which would be nice, but minimal power consumption would be priority for sure.

I see youā€™re also in San Diego so yeah not a huge fan of extreme cold temps either lol

Vornado, 50Hz 750W. FYI: I hang mine on webbing and taped the tip over protection down.

Awesome, thank you! That should work perfectly for what Iā€™m looking for.

I ran the Ignik heated top blanket with the @AERONAUT hoverquilt and it was the best sleep I have had in the cold weather. I ran it off of my jackery 1000 and I was so comfortable and cozy all night long. The hoverquilt is by the best piece of gear I have.

I use two USB heated blankets since i can in negative temps. I wrap my battery with one vlanket so it is useable in the cold and run one in the tent. The draw is ~20w from both.

I tried an electric blanket from walmart that pulled 68w and was way too hot on low. I use Zonli blankets currently

So weā€™re exploring some fun ideas for late 2024 ā€¦ any pain points or stuff people donā€™t like about current heated blankets (top or under)? 5v, 12v, packability, washability, materials, feeling wires, etc?

Weā€™ve got some really interesting stuff in the works but ā€¦ How would you improve on whatā€™s out there?

What would be your dream setup?

When I use my heated throw (before the aeronaut), one thing that does and still bothers me is that sometimes moving around, it would come unplugged from the blanket itself. Having a more secure to the blanket, etc. would be nice!

I really donā€™t mind feeling the wires - obviously washability is big must for me.

For materials, I have only ever really seen the fleece style ones but would be interested in what other materials are out there!

Total agreement with GainzGFC. Cable management/strain relief is a big concern. My AC heated blanket cord is just thin enough to pass through the front panel gap, and plenty long to get out of the way. And yeah, washability. Or a washable cover.

Also Iā€™ve recently had a few camps where the hoverquilt and heated blanket both want to move around. This is usually worse when sleeping with a partner. Some clever ideas about how they can be made to stay put (or work with the transform-a-floor) could really make a compelling product.

Iā€™m pretty sure the hoverquilt has loop attachment points to secure the blanket in place.

It does. I have two fire quits that link together. Gives some versatility if my wife wants to sleep down in the bed.

Love it! This feedback is huge. Definitely agree on those priorities!

Absolutely - and systems that work well together are killer setups - weā€™ll make sure these link up beautifully :fire:

And good call about staying put and/or working well with the transform-a-floor :call_me_hand:

You can run it off your jackery, there is a company making a proper adapter:

with the cig lighter adapter.

they have some videos on it.

Personally I like the fleece as it doesnā€™t slide around when combined with other blankets/bedding.
I usually use my 12v heated blanket under me and find I only need to run it for about 10-15 min before I get too warm. Iā€™ll use it right when I climb into bed and maybe again around 3-4am if I wake up cold.
