Has anyone done mods to the side panels to add internal storage/utility, like a molle panel that would either be mounted to the side panel and fit inside the triangle shape between the support beams, or be fixed in place and sit in front of the support beams? Hopefully this question makes sense. I’ll provide some background and thoughts…
I ordered my GFC a few weeks ago, and recently I stumbled upon the Lone Peak v2 campers. I’m starting to feel some buyer’s remorse about the GFC because it seems like the lone peak campers offer a lot more storage/hanging solutions and just more utility in general, at a reasonably higher cost penalty and slight weight penalty.
I noticed the lone peak camper not only has the option to mount a molle panel on the inside of the side panel, but there is also the option for the “gear mount” - see screenshots. Between both of these things alone, it seems like there is quite a bit more utility with the LPC.
Has anyone done something similar to this on the GFC? And/or, any thoughts on my buyer’s remorse?
One big thing is Lone Peak campers are made up of overseas parts assembled in WA vs GFC doing true US manufacturing.
For storage I think a Turbo cubby gets you most of the way to the solution shown in the renderings, and those tables always end up too high on most trucks so they become fairly useless in practice.
There are lots of solid bag options for the the space between the supports like @Filstrand that still allow you to have access through the sides which is a big benefit.
My opinion only but Lone Peak campers look fairly ugly on most trucks. They dont fit the lines of the vehicle nearly as well as a GFC does.
I really appreciate your response!! Thank you for all of the info. The filstrand bags are really cool and I had no idea those existed. it would certainly be a lot easier to just keep my gofast order and also not eat the restocking fee, not to mention GFC not having to deal with that. I definitely agree with you that GFC looks cleaner and better, while also being lighter weight.
I’m curious to see what others respond with, but ultimately i’d prefer to just make the GFC work. Maybe I am just overthinking the storage thing .. that turbo cubby does look sweet, depending on what i do for a drawer solution once i get it.
For “more storage/hanging solutions” checkout https://www.filstrand.com/, its quite literally what we do!
For more of a metal cabinet, @jedgar is spot on with the Turbo Cubby recommendation.
There are a lot of options for wedge campers now and Lone Peak, Super Pacific, and Tune Outdoors campers have more “bolt on” frame points in comparison to GFCs. This pro’s/con’s of these campers is a great recipe to derail this thread.
This forum has a lot of great ideas to tackle storage in your GFC. If you really want MOLLE panels you can cut them to fit the frame size and bolt them to the panel. Just make to sure upgrade the struts to support the weight. Not sure if this has been done before, but seems very do-able!
I would have to agree here with @jedgar with the whole US manufacturing. Between that and the overall weight, I went with a GFC and have had mine on for almost 5 years now. I’ve had the front frame bags from @Filstrand for over a month, and they are the PERFECT (IMHO) solution for storage solutions
I hear where you are coming from with accessories. I had some of the same thoughts around all the cool mods that some factory with other brands. One thing to think about though is how much space you loose inside as well as loosing the ability to reach in from the side panel which I have found I really like. It’s easy to get down the rabbit hole on all things you can do and at some point you might just end up with a full up deluxe camper…. for me any way I think some of that stuff ends up adding more inconvenience in the end. I say this after spending ton of time modifying my gfc . It is fun though…..
Thanks for the reply! I was thinking the very same about a triangular molle panel cut to size on the inside of the panel. We’ll see if I actually end up feeling like i need more utility in that regard. I could be overthinking the whole thing. Good ideas!
Sweet! That’s all good to hear. I think you’re right tho, and feels like i’ve been overthinking things a little too much. I think I will end up being satisfied with more simplicity and not adding too much. Plus, I’ve been worried about the whole payload rating with my truck (1200 lbs) and I can’t even imagine trying to make this work with a heavier camper.
What kind of mods have you done to your GFC? Would love to see some pics if you can share!
