Need help - Rim width for 255 85/R16 tires?

Hey folks,

I bought another old pickup. 4x4, '83 Toyota.

I’m upgrading to steel wheels (16") and 255 85/R16 (Falken Wildpeak AT4s). My main use is forest roads, offroading, basically going anywhere in Southern California. Not interested in mudding or rock crawling.

Here’s my question - should I use 8" wide or 7" wide wheels? I’ve read a lot on forums and elsewhere, and the consensus seems to be that 7" is better, it will be possible to air down the tires further. Can anyone share any practical advice or thoughts on this?

Went with 16x7 6x5.5 rims.

Man that looks like it’s in decent condition. Congrats and I’m envious.

Looking on various forums for this kind of information you get either experience from someone who has done this rim change or opinion. What works and what is right can be worlds apart. I would find a few big tire stores and find somebody who can read and write and has years of tire experience. They will either know the facts about this or they can look it up in their vast tire/rim data sources. I would then go to a different tire retailer to double check this information. Take notes on what they tell you. There has to be a correct answer to your question. I would stay away from non-professional opinion. Expert primary sources are always best in anything. Rim/tire mistakes can be expensive and dangerous.

I have always errored a little narrow on my Jeeps, but liked a bit more side bulge for rock crawling. I think you’d be fine either way, but I’d personally go narrow with a bit less pressure.

note: if all AI brings us is these annoying forum responses I’ll be bummed
