How was it there? A couple years ago, I was going to be staying there but hit a black cow at midnight with the Penske truck, we were about half a mile from our destination. Had to get towed all the way into Boise.
I for one, appreciate the long write-up so thanks. I enjoyed reading it, especially since I’m from Alaska, lived in Laramie, Wyoming and did the Alaska to Wyoming trip in 3 days myself and driven the alcan numerous times.
Night 17. Great Sand Dunes National Preserve, primitive camp sites outside of the Park up Medano Pass.
Night 18. Along the Rio Grande River up Stony Pass
Night 19. Camp site view at Mirror Lake outside of Tincup
That sounds like a nightmare!
Anyway it was a cool spot to stop. It’s in a fairly narrow canyon with a river running through it, so it’s nice and scenic. The one downside which isn’t huge is that they have a sprinkler system that kicks on a couple times a night on weekdays, so if you’re a light sleeper that could be a problem. We stopped for one night on our way back to CA after getting the GFC installed in Montana, so other than the above I can’t say much about things to do in the area.
I don’t think there is much to do, its mostly ranch land but it was the same for us, it looked like a cool spot to stop for the night on our trip from Georgia to Oregon.
