glad your enjoying it
. We are still out there doing our best to get after it!
I aspire to someday have a similar experience and you guys have been the ultimate inspiration. So glad to get to follow along.
Thank you so much! We feel incredibly lucky that this is the life that we get to live. It took a long time get there tho, years of making decisions that’s constantly prioritize getting out, and staying out longer. We feel like even with the challenges it’s all been worth it!
Night 19: rest stop back to UT
Night 20 and 21 - park city Utah
Night 22, 23 and 24:
(Can you spot the truck?)
Sweet lights!
Went up to the Sawtooths for the 4th and to get my July turns in.
Night #7 - near Stanley Lake, ID. You can just make out my objective through the trees. McGown Peak’s North Couloir.
Night #8 - same campsite, here’s me at the top of the couloir getting ready to shred down!
Looks dry out there like it does in Colorado…![]()
The campsite is in a burn scar from a huge fire last year. There is still a little bit of green but Oregon had the same pitiful snowfall as the rest of the west coast so it’s starting to burn too.
it’s going to be a really bad fire year, stay safe y’all
night 28 - (No longer in burn scar)
Sorry for the wall of text. It was a long trip!
My GFC journey started on the 17th of June when I set out from SW Wyoming to make my install appointment in Manhattan Montana on the 18th. Snoozed a few hours in my truck to save a bit of money on the trip. The install Team was great. Had fun chatting them up and hanging out in the shop until my install slot rolled around.
Anyway, they got it installed, gave me the run down, and I was off on my drive to Alaska for a nephew’s wedding. I got an oil change in Helena as preparation for the many miles to come. It wound up being a heck of a long drive and I learned a lot.
First night was at a KOA in Lethbridge, AB. Folks there were great and it was nice to get a hot shower in the morning after the long drive the previous days. I opted for campgrounds and such going forward through Canada because I was in a bit of a rush and didn’t want to detour too far off course for the public land (crown land I think it is called up there.)
The second night I pushed to the KOA Grande Prairie, AB so I could get another shower. I showed up 5 minutes before they closed the office, but the gal working was gracious and helpful in getting me sorted and providing info on the facilities. Popped into town for a fast food dinner, and then I drove to my spot in the back corner tent area. The mosquitos were beating against my windows the second I stopped. Those things are HUGE, and AB had been getting pounded with rain so there were hundreds of them! I opted to not even open my door and just reclined the seat to sleep. No pic because I didn’t dare get out of the truck with the vampire pterodactyls patrolling. Shower in the morning was nice because I could drive over tot he building to get out of the skeeter infested trees.
The third night was at another skeeter filled campground, Triple G Campground, in Fort Nelson, BC. I had picked up a thermacell in Grand Prairie and set it up while I hid in the truck for about 20 minutes. This got me a solid buffer area to pop the tent and such. I slept well but the morning went a bit haywire. This campground uses loonies (Canadian dollar coin) for the RV wash and showers, so I went into the restaurant to exchange currency. Sadly, they do a 1 to 1 so I got shafted on the exchange, but the worst part was when I tried to use the RV wash.
There was a bad O ring and as soon as I put the 2 coins in I got completely soaked because more water came out of the connection than the end of the pressure washer. Since I was already soaked I tried to get some grime off the back of the truck and camper (see the swirly spray marks all over in the dirt on it) but I got cold and gave up. Informed them of the issue and the gal in the restaurant (same one that I got the coins from) barely reacted. Wasn’t real pleased with the lack of any kind of refund offer or apology. The maintenance guy that came out to fix it did apologize and offer to refund the 2 dollars. I declined, skipped the shower after using one to change my soaked clothes and not being thrilled with the setup, and I headed out.
The last stop I made before pushing on to my destination in Alaska was an RV park called Nugget City in the Yukon Territory. It’s under new management/ownership and the couple that own it seem like great people. The husband is a crossfit athlete and a friendly dude, though I felt extra fat around the guy because he’s jacked! Their daughter is freaking adorable and not real shy either. She’s going to give Dad a hard time when she gets older I am sure. LOL
Anyway, super nice people and they are making lots of improvements after purchasing and taking over the location last year. It’s got a nice layout, the spaghetti in the restaurant was tasty (spicy meat in the sauce was great) and the showers are free, which was really nice out in the middle of nowhere. I had asked about the cost of the showers and the gal in the restaurant (doubles as the office for check in/paying) said they don’t charge anymore because they didn’t want people to skip hygiene in favor of saving a buck or two. Made me laugh and appreciated it. It’s a gorgeous area and I enjoyed my stay.
On my return trip I pushed hard to get through the really isolated northern Canada area, and then pushed again the second day to just get back into the states again. Drove from Palmer, Alaska to Grand Prairie’s KOA and slept in the cab again, and then pushed all the way down to Helena, Montana the second day. It was rough, but some good audiobooks kept me going. Showered in a truck stop, got an oil change done, and pushed on to a buddy’s place in Casper.
Overall, a good trip to learn what I do and do not like and want out of this set up. I’ll adjust how I use it going forward, but I love having the GFC. It’s a great addition for minimalist camping.
