Rant: GFC V2 Pop Locks and Panels

Owner of V2 GFC, rolling up on 2 years here. I like this camper, that is except for the aluminum panels and, specifically, the “Southco-style” compression latches. I’m 100% sure I am not the only one, maybe preaching to the choir, or maybe angering fanboys with this rant, but these things seriously suck.

I have constant problems with them getting jammed, they were terrible right out of the factory. If I go snowboarding and it snows or freezes overnight, forget about opening these things without an extension cord and a hair dryer. (exaggerating but not too far from the truth) every year I must oil them and have even had to file the sides of the pop latches (which I am sure will probably now rust) to get them to operate smoothy. I purchased the insanely overpriced 3D Printed covers and, yes, they do cover them nicely. But now I can’t operate the doors quickly without having to pry them off and it makes the locks even more difficult to pop open. Doing that with gloves on or wet or muddy, what a pain.

Oah and the key operation itself is janky as the one directional keylock, you have to insert the key at just the right angle or it won’t work smoothly and the key rattles around in the lock. Drives me frikin nutz. On top of all that, I can’t keep these alum panels from bending and not lining up with the frame so I can’t even close these latches without a lot of pushing and holding it flush. I’ve had to bend the panels multiple times. The alum panels need some sort of reinforcement or frame to keep them straight and make them a little more secure.

I get it, it’s cool and hip to say your camper is “the lightest” and it’s a selling point I guess. But its one that seems to be taken to the extreme while sacrificing quality and durability. What’s the purpose of it being light if it’s flimsy as all hell?!

And why why why, to open up my camper, do I have to go around in the cold, in the dark, after driving 8 hours, to unlock 6 friking tiny little janky locks and pop 6 friking janky latches with this tiny little key just to get at all my gear and God forbid at some point go to sleep at night. Just a garbage design. Total garbage.

Ultimately, the swing panels and locks seem like they were just an afterthought or not fleshed out in my version. Had I known how much trouble I would have with these things I would not have purchased this camper.

Anyone have any suggestions or aftermarket ideas for better locks? or even more sturdy panels? OR maybe an aftermarket solution to lock the panels with one lock or handle that operates better? Probably it will cost thousands more, and I hate doubling down on systems like this with more money, but just getting fed up with these things. Hope GFC reads this and puts out a upgrade in the future. Maybe they have planned it but I’m a busy working professional and my life doesn’t revolve around updates to GFC campers.

/rant off!

I don’t live in an area with snow, but we get a lot of desert dust and dirt. I have the covers and have zero issues with mine. I also upgraded to the Pro locks which have a bi-directional key which is nice.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful

I have some of the same issues/complaints with mine, but everything in life has trade-offs and this is what the manufacturer went with. Unless you have a solution that doesn’t add significant cost/weight to accomplish this, you are just suggesting different trade-offs based on your situation. You can’t please everyone. That being said if I bought a camper today I would probably make a different decision.

I had GFC swap out my lock cores with new ones that had bi-directional keys. I have a GFC V2 that I picked up in summer 2022 and swapped the locks sometime in 2024. I kept the same lock bodies, but new cores and new keys. Complete game changer for me. It won’t solve your door alignment and latching issues, but it’s made fumbling with the keys a thing of the past.

This. Bi-directional upgrade was massive! Live in snow country and that + aftermarket latch covers from Etsy and I’m golden.

I can to relate to some of these issues. I too live in snow country and the locks have frozen on me. I have a V2 and got the Etsy lock covers. The ones on the back panel eventually broke due to repeated use in cold temps. I got a single replacement from GFC (their in house model) and it’s much burlier but absolutely sucks for practical use. It usually requires 2 hands to pry off the cover. I finally got the Etsy replacements and much happier with those, just understand that they have a limited lifespan.

I upgraded the latches to the bi-directional key with the V2 Pro update. It is SO much better than the old key design, excellent, worthy upgrade. I haven’t had any issues with the panels bending so can’t relate there. But my big complaint with the new locks are the metal latches on the inside of the panels. Both latches on the back panel will loosen to the point that the back panel is bouncing back and forth and can be lifted open even with the latches closed and locked.

Here some pics of my problem:

I’m hoping GFC has some suggestions for how to remedy the situation.

Thanks Felix. So the plot thickens. So if I get the new V2 pro locks I get to look forward to them failing because the latches wear out. They are $200! I feel like I should be given these for free from GFC at least as a consolation for such a poor product but if this is the case with them I don’t want them as I will probably get my stuff stolen.

And all my problems above and I haven’t even abused my camper at all! Ive been camping in it only a few times and gone to the snow only twice. Ive opened the side panels under 50 times and the latches are already need of service.

As I suspected I’m not the only one here. What a hot mess.
