Rivian Canyonlands Maze District challenge

Hi everyone! Am less than 2 weeks from getting my GFC Pro Camper installed on my R1T (can’t wait!). In advance of that, I had planned an offroad adventure in the Maze District of Canyonlands NP, going from Hanksville UT to the Doll House campground near the west-bank confluence of the Green & Colorado Rivers–only about 80 miles if you take Poison Springs Rd, but over 60 of that is offroad, about 15 of which is even more technical than I had expected (and I expected highly technical).

In addition to wanting the backcountry adventure generally, I wanted to test the R1T’s range on some of the most difficult offroading terrain, and then understand whether that range test might also accommodate the GFC (given the modest range hit of having a GFC).

One of my adult sons and I attempted this 2 wks ago; while it’s certainly possible to do the full roundtrip starting w/100% charge from Hanksville, the offroading is pretty technical, and in the roughest sections drains the R1T’s range 4X more than the offroading estimates that the truck gives you (and 2X more on the less-extreme-but-still-challenging sections). So I wouldn’t recommend attempting it with the add’l range hit of a camper, and in the end we made the informed decision to turn around about 11 miles from our Doll House campsite (before then blowing a tie rod and needing a very expensive and very time-consuming tow out of there…suffice to say I now plan to install tie-rod sleeves from DHD, given how wimpy the ones on 2023 and earlier Rivian models are). I would, however, recommend going as far as the Teapot Rock campsite, even with the Pro Camper, as it’s about 15 miles closer than Doll House, and avoids the worst of the worst sections that are super-fun and challenging, but which REALLY drain the battery.

In any case, my son and I took a few video clips, and I just stitched them together into a 12-min vid for anyone who may be curious to learn from our experience.

Thats a great trail. Nice work testing out both the range and the capabilities of the Rivian! I love to see people pushing their rigs!

One point of feedback that I think is worth considering

The losses from the camper due to drag are negligible off road.

the real loss of the gfc profile comes over 55mph, not crawling at 5mph

From experience, the change to 20” tires is going to be more of a hit than going from a rtt to a gfc

Lastly, going from a street biased range queen Rivian to proper off road, you absolutely see losses for each off road capability focused changed, but it’s like VA disability math, you don’t really end up adding inefficiency, it becomes a function of a fractional cut of the remaining value (two mods that individually cut 10% efficiency wont be a straight 20% range reduction, if that were the case I’d be at like 100miles of range on my ‘22

Awesome video. Sounds like you’ve done your research as the Maze is a decently gnarly area. I don’t head too far into the more technical areas unless I’m in a group so I have a ride home when I inevitably break something :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

And, you did it on non-AT tires :flexed_biceps: hahaha, braver gents than me.
