I’m designing a modular truck bed system for my GFC coming in March based on what I like after having a GFC, FWC, and a Transit van. I have a good sense for what I want but might build a couple and see if other folks are interested in them too. Are there any features you wish someone would build into a truck bed system? I’ve got a battery module, fridge slide, drawers, table, and working on a water module w/pump but ultimately stuff can come and go depending on what you are doing. Thanks for the insights, I’ll share some CAD photos at some point but want to get it a bit closer to production first.
After doing this and modifying it a bunch over the past 3-4 years (I picked up my GFC in early 2021) I ended up making a bed slide with a few lengths of L-track along the sides and center. If I were to do it again I’d just buy a slide from one of the manufacturers and adapt it to whatever I wanted it for.
The full-bed slide is the best option in my opinion because you can still attach cabinets or smaller drawer units to it, but you can also put:
-Bike fork mounts (Kuat dirtbag)
-Ski racks (I’ve used ATV rifle racks)
-Tool boxes (I’m a builder so all my stuff lives in Packout boxes)
-Bins of camping gear
…to name a few.
You can also clear everything out and still use your truck for truck stuff if that interests you. Nothing is out of reach because the whole thing slides out of the truck.
There’s the basic design of mine with a cabinet bolted to the back corner of it. Again though, if I were to do it again I’d find an off-the-shelf model that fits a 1st Gen Tacoma and go from there. They aren’t cheap. but once you factor in design/build time & materials cost it evens out pretty quickly.
