V2 Max - photos and initial thoughts

Over the last several months, we have had a lot of chats with Graeme about the campers, our experiences in ours, and some of our thoughts on them. I have to give Graeme a lot of credit; we have some strong thoughts on some things, and throughout all of our input, Graeme listened carefully and never once pushed back on any of our opinions, if anything, he asked more questions to more deeply understand how we have used the camper and some of the challenges we have faced with it over the years.

Of course, there is a lot of good to be said about the campers as well! The truth of it is that we would have been out of the camper a long time ago if it didn’t fit into our way of travel in the way that it has. The largest of these is that it has never once prevented us from traveling to the often harder-to-get-to places that we want to spend time. More often than not, our truck is the limitation. We really gotta get a locker!

Based on those conversations, he asked a while ago if we would take out the new V2 Max and come back to him with some of our thoughts. The short answer after taking it out is that we feel like this camper is pretty freaking dialed!

The addition of the pass-through is really nice! It certainly opens up a lot of new ways that the camper can be used, and solves some problems for heating as well. It sounds like a heater option from GFC is in the works as well.

The nose storage solution that they have come up with is kinda a no-brainer, and honestly, I’m surprised that no one here came up with it sooner.

I think the thing that excites me the most is the bulkhead wire connection and molle panel (even though I usually say less: molle and more mole :burrito::mexico:). Having that molle panel in there really opens up a lot more storage options, and ways to hide or to mount solar & battery options.

If you want to see the full list of features, their website has a lot more than I want to list out here.

But more than happy to answer some questions from our four-day trip out with it.

We will have a YouTube video coming up soon on our channel covering our time in it as well. Until then, here are some photos from that trip.

Bulkhead wire pass-through is pretty sweet, Solar and Starlink mini compatible

The ano color for the max looks so much better than the silver, IMO.

Little length comparison, 18” longer than standard.

They added a bungee inside to help close it. We noticed it greatly improved the tent’s performance when it’s super windy and suggested that they lean into that and potentially add a second mounting option to be able to use it while sleeping.

On that note, they brought in someone to help with tent tension, and this tent was noticeably tighter than any of the others that we have seen!

The pass-through feels pretty roomy.

The nose storage looks kinda small in this photo, but it’s got enough room to fit a decent amount of bedding in.

Does look like it has everything I would want in an upgrade. If I was in the market I’d totally would jump in the max. The pass through is my fav

I’m still on team v1 for now waiting for some of their promised upgrades

I would also go with the Max if I were in the market still. The pass through is definitely the largest draw for me.

All the accessories don’t really mean as much to me, but that is because I don’t live out of mine and I’ve had it for 4+ years so it’s pretty dialed.

I am also waiting for some V1 support, primarily an updated tent fabric. I was told they would have a solution/gameplan by the end of this year.

I think the Max is the first actual “camper” GFC has put out. The all-one-space concept of it makes it hit that criteria in my mind. Until this point I think they’ve made “integrated rtt’s.”

Thanks for the heads up! This is a very exciting development. I’ll send an email to get my name on some sort of list.

I completely agree with this. Wish they would’ve just put the bungees on all campers and RTT’s. Seems like a simple and useful addition. I’m pretty sure the old V1’s even came with this feature at one point.

Also, interesting that someone was brought in to help with the tent tension considering the early explanation that was given about it not being possible due to the tent architecture/construction.

Overall this new model looks like a really great option that solves many of the “issues” people were asking about. So that’s definitely nice to see!

Those tent tensions were actually in some of the earlier V2s. My friend that owned one had the tent tension in his (~#1700) but then mine didn’t (~#4700). The reasoning back then as to why they took them out is they found the bungee lost tension over time. I wished the V2 I had had it because it certainly made a difference. Not sure if V1s had or at what point in the V2 production they ended up ditching it all together.

The bungee was in the V1’s. I think all of them had it. Mine is a late V1 (971) and it has it and I remember seeing it in the early models as well. It’s still elastic and doing its job almost 5 years later.

tent would be extremely difficult to close without that bungee. I have forgotten a couple times and then it all just pushes out and gets pinched. Reasoning that bungee cord would get stretched out over time seems lame. Mine still works 6 years and counting. Plus you could always replace it.

This V2 Max looks really cool. I can’t believe GFC finally caved and made the pass-through area. I think originally they were able to tell the people what they were going to get but as more competition and more interest was out you have to do what sells

I’ll be curious to see how the Max looks on a mid-size truck like a Colorado or Tacoma. Looking at my Colorado, I could see it being awkward to add 18 more inches to the length…

Only one I’ve seen thus far

Gonna take a while to get used to after looking at the original size for years

Yeah, no doubt. On the full-size truck it looks normal but on a short bed mid-size truck . . .

Makes me think of these monkeys:

I also missed the deposit train. I reached out to GFC and they told me that after they fulfill the preorders they will reassess their production and fulfillment capability they will reach back out.

I got to speak with Graeme a bit back in June when I was running into issues with my V2 and he was extremely interested in how I use the tent in Alaska year round and asked about my heating setup and what worked/didn’t work and what I was hoping for. I’m really happy to see a lot of what I was hoping for ended up making it into the V2 Max and I’m really interested in the heater component. Not sure how well it will work on that door panel and if the struts will need to be replaced to hold the weight but I really like the integration and pass through. Wish I had the space on the jeep but I’ll just have to wait for the next truck and make sure i get the 6’5 bed instead of the 5ft bed.

I’d like to see what the max on an 8ft bed looks like…
