What’s up with hinges breaking

GFC #367 rear hinge failed this weekend.

Already have the Embassy hinges on order.

Now I have to figure out how to order the updated universal bracket so I can still use my awning. Update 5/31/21: eli added the updated brackets and the hinges/brackets are in route.

I think if you give them a call they will give you the new brackets free of charge.

Hate the keep reviving this but another one gave up the ghost today Second one and this one just outta nowhere. Honestly seems like UV related to me. I’m parking outside 100% of the time and the Southern CA sun can be intense. Glad to be on the PIT already and that the failures timed themselves semi well

@Slowboater - I would suggest adding some sealant or waterproof tape over the extra holes as you install the new hinge. I had mine done about 8 months ago and when it rains water drips through the unused older hinge holes. Is a bit annoying. I used some silicone seal to plug up the old holes. Just my experience. Love the new hinges! Durable and a nice peace of mind knowing I can trust them.

So this just happened. I fortunately just got home from a trip in the mountains, and it did not happen on I-40 going 80 mph. I have the replacement kit from GFC though I really wish they had contacted me when they were here in NC, since my cap is #206 I was under the impression I was on the list of repairs, apparently not… So now I guess I have to do this sooner rather than later.

Same thing happened to me. I missed the PIT in MN by about two weeks.

Thankfully Eli came to the rescue and sent me the repair kit. I really took my time and it took me about 4 hours to replace the rear hinge. I will probably be able to get it down to about half that for the next two. Eli’s hinge install video answered all my questions I had after reading the written instructions.

I am happy with the upgrade.

Same here. I’m 296 and missed the PIT by two weeks bc my hinges were fine at the time lol. Got the kit and did one panel recently. Really wasn’t too bad.

I gave mine a good look over on Saturday and one broke on Tuesday. Six hours short of exactly 1 year after install. Might have jinxed it~

Planning on doing the hinge install soon. Eli in Warranty is kicking ass; shipped shock clips out to me same day as I lost one when taking the rear panel off…

Do these 2 plates hold it with just the latches? I need to carry all sorts of stuff for work in a city that people will steal anything they can touch, so it can’t be open, but I don’t want it falling off going down the road.

Thanks

Yes. I have used the gfc Band-Aids myself. From the pictures though you can see that these Band-Aids are held on with 1 bolt so if you have a tool you can remove them. I know how sketchy San Francisco is and I wouldn’t leave anything there even if it was locked up. Good luck.

Thanks. GFC hasn’t contacted me other than Michael saying they are only going to SoCal this trip. No offer of band aid or any other advice Here’s my copy. I just don’t want things to be easy to grab or have it fly off. I don’t go anywhere that’s very threatening or leave anything in there of much value other than me needing it on a daily basis for work. image|690x388

@Sunsetsearider, I think in the photo that you can see a guy running off with your backpack.

I just wanted to add that I did indeed state that you could reach out to CS for the bandaid kit in our email string. I typically do not just state we aren’t coming to your area and just leave it at that. Eli did respond saying they had been sent out and if they have not reached you please let me know.

When I am on the PIT I typically do not have the bandwidth for extra items so I try to just cut myself out and have you all reach out to CS directly.

I got the two side panels on, the t nuts did not at all slide into the extrusion like in the video, so I had to press them in place which meant they were unable to move freely, major pain in the ass. Sides went on ok, but the back has a major issue; the two aluminum docking blocks are prohibiting sliding on the cover piece, and when I remove two bolts (t nuts unable to move freely) to get cover slid on, I do not have enough space to get the bolts back into the drilled holes/t nuts…so I am 2/3 of the way done and have a call into Eli…hoping for a solution.

@Matty I’ve called you twice today from a 970 number, call me back!

I got it figured out; spoke to Eli, filed down the t nuts and increased the size of the hole, then I was able to get everything together…thanks

#810 Seeing about 6” of light on each side of rear hinge. Just checked a few weeks ago and all looked fine. Trying to get into GFC in Belgrade for an emergency repair before the truck goes out for 6 days of camping.

We got the truck! See you tomorrow afternoon.

Made it to GFC shop same day as I noticed the hinge issue and they were nothing but accommodating. I had to have the repair done in the next day, so I left the truck and picked up the next morning. Many thanks to these guys! Even got a ride back to work which is 20 minutes away.

Talked to a passionate guy who is on the executive team who gave me a glimpse into GFC future endeavors. This company is doing awesome things and make me proud their in my home state.
