Is there a video or description of how to replace a hinge?
My rear one was ‘slightly’ split and it pretty much exploded and now it’s about a 1’ tear. I taped the shit out of it with gorilla tape but I do have a replacement hinge on hand. I just got a rivet gun yesterday so now I can tie into it.
It would be nice to have a description of how to do it.
@Mike_GFCUSA you got somethin for me? Sorry your PITA got cancelled. As annoyed as I am with this F*&$$ing hinge - we gotta be safe.
I’ll send you a separate email - I want you to send me a side hinge too. The rear one failed pretty spectacularly - huge pop and bang - so now I’m thinking maybe I should carry a side spare too. As a reminder - my side one is starting to go too.
All this time I was worried about the rear panel hinge since it had stated to tear and the edges were stretched - but then the side panel hinge let go today when I went to open it.
Really hoping the new style of sealing truly results in a long lasting hinge install.
Welcome to the club, been there done that. Sorry you have to feel like you feel especially right now with the undetermined wait time. Get some friends together and get it off the truck and onto dollies, that was the best solution for me while I was waiting. Couldn’t stand looking at my $5k+ pile on my truck with broken hinges
If it comes to taking it off - remember you can run the GFC without panels. I’m suffering with Gorilla tape hinges right now. But, if it gets really bad I’ll just cut the doors off for now.
I do have a rear hinge that I can replace but I don’t have a side one and one of the sides is going too.
Why not just drill out the rivets and run zip ties through the hole and around the tubular frame? I have only seen one individual do that. But it keeps the door functional IF you have to open it and it presents a cleaner look than duct tape.
I have recently been looking into reading up on this issue you guys were having on Tacoma forums as well as your own GFC forum about the hinge breaking. I do know that you came up with a new hinge system that is no longer utilizing the rivet style doors and now only the weather stripping. How is that system working out? It looks like a better system overall. I wanted to ask a question/make a suggestion. Would it be easier for those that already have this issue to be able to swap out their old style hinges and doors for these newer style? It may be cost effective to those that are stilling waiting for theirs to be fixed and it could be easier on you as a company knowing they have the latest that you are currently using on your current campers. Would appreciate your feed back
My rear hinge has some light peaking through… already replaced both side doors… With them being closed due to Covid19, who knows when I’ll be able to get a replacement shipped out.
They were able to send me a new side hinge a few weeks ago despite the shutdown, it just took a few weeks.
I got my rivet gun and extra 3/16" drill bit from Amazon last week and may sneak out throughout the day to work on replacing my side hinge.
With the rate things are going, I figure I should just plan a fall trip to MT to get the re-seal done as I can’t see them re-starting the repair tour anytime soon.
At build #128 had they switched to the new sealant between the hinge and extrusion or was yours one of the original design?
The rivets have nothing to do with hinge failures. Simply put, if these hinges don’t sit squarely on their mounting surface, weak points can form. Some early campers were built with a foam gasket that had the potential to impede the hinges’ ability to sit squarely. Since discovering this issue we have redesigned the campers to utilize a liquid seal, rather than a gasket, which allows the hinges to sit squarely and remain functional for the long haul.
Wiley, the big dog around here, summed it up earlier in this thread. Here’s what he said:
I appreciate your suggestion. It sucks that some of our customers had to go through this, but we are genuinely doing everything we can to resolve these problems for them. Our customers that have experienced problems with hinges will be taken care of through our warrant department on a case by case basis. When we’re able to travel freely we are all looking forward to the Product Improvement Tour that has been in the works.
A self-leveling solution. As long as the underlying surface is relatively even, that ought to address the problem.
When GFC published their findings & resolution, I appreciated that they were confident that the source of the problem had been found, that it was shared publicly, and that the resolution was put in place as soon as possible. My camper is on the (possibly) affected list, and I’m looking forward to seeing Mike in town, or visiting Bozeman again to have the service performed. Don’t let the C19 get you down.
Passenger side hinge broke this weekend. Just contacted GFC to see what options are. Super bummed. As soon as I purchased the unit I was concerned about design. It felt really delicate for the intended use of this camper style.
