Camper Mattress!

To re-revive a very old thread. Did you remove the GFC mattress sections from the removable panels?

Yes, I took all the original GFC foam out but Iā€™ve saved it all in case we change our minds in the future or decide to sell, etc.

Do you guys sleep with a pillow on your mattress or prefer without it?

2 pillows each for usā€¦

Did you ever end up trying this 2 single exped configuration with 2? I have a single exped and am pondering a second if you think it performs nearly as well as the dou. Thanks @techjansen

@wra

Now that youā€™ve had this set up for awhile what are your thoughts for us side sleepers? I have a single exped and itā€™s the best sleep ever as a side sleeper but also do not like the fact that I have to pump it up and deflate it every time. Did you end up getting 2? How did that work if so?

Thanks!

I havenā€™t tried the two single expeds side-by-side beyond the test fit I mentioned before.

Weā€™re headed out the first weekend in October and Iā€™ll try to take the two singles and report back.

So I tried both a cut memory foam mattress and also got a tri-folding 4 inch mattress. The memory foam was cheap Wal-Mart and definitely wasnā€™t enough. The trifold was good for sleeping but it was huge. It took up way too much space in the bed when in transport. So I sucked it up and sprung for the exped single mattress. It is amazing for sleeping and the inflation/deflation, while it adds a step, only takes a couple minutes for both. It does spread out to just over half the width so I can see how 2 side by side might be a squeeze, but it was the best solution for me.

I prefer a bigger one since Iā€™m traveling with my partner. Itā€™s easier to take with us and doesnā€™t take up as much space as two one-person mats. We decided to invest in a good, compact one that will be comfortable to sleep on. Also, we like to buy good beddings, itā€™s the key to our perfect sleep. My favorite ones are good quality silk because they are lights and good for the skin since I struggle with acne. What are your favorites? Or you donā€™t like to bring beddings with you? We donā€™t go camping very often, so we donā€™t care that much.

Couldnā€™t agree more with your assessment. I received my v2 RTT a couple of months ago. The included 2" mattress is way too firm for me. I initially added a 1 1/2" memory foam topper but, as a side sleeper, still woke up with stiff/sore shoulders and hips. I replaced the memory foam topper with an Exped Megamat Duo LW+ and am super happy with the purchase despite the steep price ($350). So far, Iā€™ve only used the Exped in conjunction with the stock 2" mattress and hadnā€™t considered removing the stock mattress but really like the idea of being able to store the Exped in the RTT (which I cannot do currently). Thanks for the recommendation!

Post how that goes. Iā€™ve started putting a single inflatable up there for me (v1) because Iā€™m a side sleeper and the mattress is too hard for me.

Greetings lovedrive. Do you still love this? Iā€™ve been softening things up with a thermarest pad which works well but is an extra layer of gear. I like the simplicity of this. Can you link the excact topper? Thanks

Greeetings Lackey. Do still love this? and could you link the excact topper you used. Iā€™ve been softening things a bit with a thermarest air mattress which has worked worked well but looks nice tooā€¦Thanks

@howcox So far so good. It can almost be too soft for some. I may recommend the medium firmness but itā€™s personal preference. My wife loves it. We also finished up a weeklong trip through the Lost Coast with it and itā€™s nice just packing some top sheets, blankets, and pillows. Only issue weā€™ve got is with the 1" pad and the Vrnclr storage up top, the camper is a but more of a challenge to close. Without one or the other, Iā€™m sure itā€™ll be as easy as before, but we still leave it up there closed.

Thanks. Glad I asked. Apreciate the feedback. My plan is to trade the gfc blue foam for the topper within the existing pads to maintain closing clearence. Medium sounds good. You guys have fun out there:))

Has anyone done any colder weather camping with various options (bare GFC mattress, memory foam, inflatable camping pad, etc) who can comment on warmth differences? Iā€™ve camped a few cooler nights up there recently sleeping on a Big Agnes SLX inflatable pad and it got pretty chilly in the sleeping bag which is supposedly a 15Āŗ bag, and it probably only got down to around 40Āŗ over night. Itā€™s a 2-person bag though, so Iā€™m not sure if all that extra space is making me colder. I know the R-value for your sleeping pad can have a huge impact on your sleeping comfort in terms of warmth. The sleeping bag Iā€™m using has very little insulation on the bottom of the bag, for example, and relies mostly on your mattress/pad to provide that insulation.

Basically Iā€™m curious about options that are easier in terms of setup/teardown versus this pad which is NOT self-inflating, without losing a bunch of insulation. Memory foam obviously seems easiest to deal with, but the Exped-style mats also at least self-inflate (though deflating is more annoying).

Iā€™ve slept on the bare mattress a few times and I like firmer mattresses typically, but itā€™s just a wee bit too firm for my shoulders, especially if Iā€™ve also been doing things like mountain biking during the day, which is typically why Iā€™m camping in the first place.

For what it is worth I have a Big Agnes 15Āŗ bag (with the same no insulation underneath you) and it cant keep me warm below 50Āŗ with their pad or any other, and in general I sleep hot. They say the 15Āŗ is a ā€œsurvivalā€ rating and I am not sure even that is true. Bought another brand and have been warm since.

Good to know. I suspect this one will end up being my peak-time (read: Summer) bag to use when my wife comes along (itā€™s a double-wide), and Iā€™ll revert to using warmer single bags in the colder months. And yeah, I definitely wouldnā€™t expect any bag to be good down to its rating, but 15Āŗ and 40Āŗ feel pretty distant.

I bet the 15 degree rating is with 2 people in there. 2 bodies generate a lot of heat.

If you have power this is killer! Designed for truckers that donā€™t want to idle their engine all night. Great reviews.
