What’s up with hinges breaking

You can email support@gfcengineering.com and they will reply to you, usually within a few hours, with helpful information. That would be a lot more efficient than repetitively asking the same question in multiple threads.

Hey guys,

PIT master @Mike_GFCUSA is wrapping up this pass through Cali and making his way back home. He’s going to get some much deserved R and R, re-up on warranty materials, and then he’ll be hitting the road for PNW. He’s aiming for a quick run out there in early December, but if he’s unable to do that and make it home for the holidays then that trip will happen in January. Either way, when he’s getting that trip planned out an put together, he’ll email everyone on the PIT list in that area to coordinate.

@ace7196 I appreciate you saving our inbox, but we’re honestly happy to answer direct questions via email.

Hey guys! The nature of the PIT is that it is always fluid, making it difficult to constantly update. If I don’t post an update past the one I gave you that means it hasn’t changed or I do not have a new update. I should have something for you guys soon as I wrap up the Cali PIT.

Thanks for the note, Mike.
Stay safe & healthy out there.

Sorry to see that! Are you getting a pit repair anytime soon?

Mike said PIT was going your way any day now, then East coast afterwards. I’m hanging on 2/3 doors right now, however, it did make my latest 4000mi trip a bit inconvenienced.

My back panel came off 1800 miles from home. Do you know what size hinges from ACE hardware you used to secure yours? You can text me at (719)659-6144 if that works for you.

Thanks,
Bill

I used 4 inch hinges when my panel snapped off. They worked out pretty well for a temporary fix.

Thanks! I’ll swing buy ACE and pick some up.

I am so bummed, Catastrophic hinge failure has turned my Tacotruck into a Taco Truck. The thing aggressively detached just as I was about to close it. Out of nowhere, I regularly inspect it for cracks and such. The rig is only 14 months old, build 437. It is now held on with Gaffers Tape and Zip Ties. I hope it will make it to Jalama next week, and the Carizzo the week after? Any help with replacements is much appreciated.

Having lived with that for many months, I feel your pain. I was amazed at how wonderful it is to be able to open and close the panels since I have the new hinges. Doesn’t fix your troubles, but the new hinges rock.

The crew at GFC seem to be on it. I got a call this morning to go over new hinge install options (less than 24 hours). Besides the inconvenience of a broken hinge, I am happy GFC is so vigilant. I can’t wait to get the new hinges, might have to drive out to Bozeman.

That sucks welcome to the club. I noticed you have five beef rack bars. Maybe the most I’ve seen. Do tell what do you put on top of that thing that requires five bars.

Haha,
I usually have a clamshell for fishing gear, spearguns, paddles, etc, and then various lengths of surfboards and SUPs or kayaks. It is way easier to have an extra rack then reconfigure every time for the best fit, they all have different ideal attachment lengths.

What do you use to attach your box to the beef bars? I haven’t found anything slim enough to get between the bars and the roof.

:call_me_hand::call_me_hand:

My clamshell rack has a clamp system, it grabs the beef bars like a claw (Picture). I have a rack for my kayaks that has a carriage bolt and plate with a wingnut like tightener, for that I just flipped the wingnut from the bottom to the top, it works great. Some of the T-nuts with studs would also work, slid into the beef rack and right through the carriage bolt hole pattern (they are buried in the garage, or I would send a picture). For the SUPs, the racks have a thin band that fits under the beef rack and locks in (picture also). Regular surfboards get wedged in and strapped right to the beef rack with some GFC twist lock nuts. It has all been road tested several times on all day Baja washboard.:grinning: it is worth it to stop every several hours and check on it all, from experience.

These pictures look similar to what is being used for the new v2 panels… are your panels now removable as well?

FWIW: I drove home yesterday evening after a bike ride, and forgot to close one of the side panels. 30+ miles at highway speeds and I can hear or see no damage. I have the new embassy hinge on a V1 camper. I DO NOT recommend trying this at home, and WILL NOT be performing this test again. Just figured I’d share as a testament to how well built the new hinges are…

Perfect. Try this away from home. Got it. Thanks!

Are you’re hinges glued on or riveted?
