What kind of storage bins are those in pic#2? Looks like about the size I’ve been going for, was close to pulling the trigger on some front runners and those look similar in size…
Those are yetis. Great product but prepare to shovel out some cash!
I prefer pelican cases my self. They are just as good and not nearly as expensive. They are pricey but not nearly as pricey.
i also use pelican cases, mostly brought off craigslist or fb marketplace for pretty cheap, they seem to work well
They are the Yeti LoadOut GoBox 30.
Thank goodness for this thread, my wife finally got to sleep in the tent for the first time, and her shoulder is all out of sorts. I am trying to figure out the best option while also keeping costs low. It seems like two expeed mattresses seem to be the answer.
I get a little sore to but it goes away the next day. So I havent complained much really. I use a nemo pillow and those are awesome but, I think those could also make it less comfortable. Going to try a normal pillow and see if bringing the head up higher helps.
I’m not sure what you meant by “two” exped mattresses…but, in case it helps, I’ve tried a few configurations and this is what I found:
-
exped megamat duo, the double wide one, just fits and is very comfortable. See my lengthy review earlier in this thread.
-
I’ve also tried to use two side-by-side single exped megamats. This should work, on paper it is slightly less than half the width of the above, but in practice the tension in the width causes one mat to pop up. I won’t say it doesn’t work…it probably would with people on the mats to anchor them. But I didn’t pursue it based on my initial trial.
-
one single exped megamat, for one person, is great. I can fit the mat inflated, two pillows, a sleeping bag and sheets and still close the GFC easily. (I do open the deflate valve so the mat can expel some air if it gets hot inside the GFC while closed.)
We just placed an order for the new SuperLite RTT. This is our first RTT so we opted not to add the mattress and do some research on the best mattress and bedding solutions. Does anyone have any plans for their SuperLite yet? or have any recommendations? We’ll be spending around 3 weeks straight in the tent so its important that the mattress is comfortable for multiple nights and also that we can easily store it/close the tent. Thanks in advance!
My trips are just me and the dog up top, how much room is there beside a single for her bed? Or alternatively, how robust is the material that her nails won’t poke a hole?
The single is very close to half the width of the standard GFC. Just a hair over 25 inches I think. My dog (62 lbs) and her medium bed fits perfectly next to the single.
So far I’ve found the megamat to be pretty durable. My dog has stood on them, or snuck on to my bed to curl up when she goes to bed early, more than a few times. But I don’t encourage her to spend time on them…mostly just to keep them clean since she gets pretty dirty when we camp.
Reviving an old post here. If you have an 18v cordless tool system many make a leaf blower (I have Makita). I use that on my current megamat and the nozzle from the blower fits perfectly over the valves for inflating or deflating.
I had a similar idea using a Black and Decker cordless tire inflator that has a low pressure setting. It worked really well for inflating, not quite as well for deflating. It was definitely faster than the hand pump and it sounds like your approach is even better.
I went away from the powered inflator because it was too loud. I often roll-up late to campsites that friends have staked out and I always felt bad making a racket if they were already sleeping (or trying to enjoy a beverage around the fire). How loud is your leaf blower?
You might consider The Exped Schnozzle Pumpbag. It works great to inflate the megamate, no noise, and no power required. Lay on the mat and open both valves to deflate.
It is a little on the loud side when on full power. However, I let it self inflate for a few minutes while I arrange other stuff around camp and then it takes just a minute on low power that you could still easily have a conversation over the noise. If I’m not worried about noise it only takes just several seconds on full power to top off.
I’ll be following this thread.
I assume I have the 2" mattress (build date Mar 2020), and am looking to replace their foam with something softer (I do not want to add any cushion on top). I’ve been flirting with the 2" Purple brand gel seat cushions, but maybe this 1.7" thick knockoff can accomplish a similar goal for a lot less money:
(ummm… pardon the gratuitous image)
Haven’t compared dimensions yet to see if 16.5" x 13.4" is a good fit or not…
I’d be concerned about bottoming out with softer foam in the cushions. Also, you’d need about 20 of those things to cover the full area of the mattress.
Finally went ahead and replaced the foam inside the factory bed cushions with some nice latex foam. At the advice of the folks over at Sleep on Latex, I decided on 2" of the firm density foam. I haven’t spent a full night on it but there’s a noticeable improvement in comfort. I’d say its not too much softer overall, but it feels much more supportive and doesn’t pinpoint pressure on the shoulders and hips when you’re on your side. I’m going to try out just the 2" for a few nights, but also have 1" of the medium density that I’m planning to add on top if we decide we need more plushness.
The only obvious downside that I can see right now is that its way heavier than the stock foam. Moving individual pieces around in the camper isn’t any more difficult but if you’re very concerned about adding weight up high on your rig it could be a turn off.
(Posted in another category that was talking mattress also. Thought I’d post here too so all can see.)
Exped Duo huge success!
I’ve had my V2 on my 2015 Tundra for a month now and slept a couple nights, well tried to sleep but didn’t do so very successfully. I tried a 1.5 inch memory foam on top of the stock mattress but that didn’t help much and it was tuff to close the tent but it was possible.
My wife and I bought the ExPed duo through REI, threw it up there and we love it!!! It fits so well. I read all the reviews about it pushing out on the tent fabric and being 2” to wide etc… nope, it fits perfect and when I deflated it the tent closes perfectly. Couldn’t be more excited about the difference it make.
Is that in addition to or replacing the mattress that came with the GFC?
