Put in my order for my first GFC and have been thinking about my build. Going on a ‘25 Ram Power Wagon and am trying to get a sense of how people are doing storage. Is decked worth it? Is there still room to hang out in the bed with it in place? Etc…. Any input or thoughts are welcome!
I considered getting Decked drawers for my truck but realized they would make it more or less impossible to hang out in the bed unless the bed panels were moved. As tall as the drawers are, there would not be enough head room. I have been considering building a drawer that just covers 1/3 of the bed, leaving the other 2/3 open.
I’ve personally had multiple Decked systems with GFC’s. I would pass. The only way it’s somewhat tolerable, is with a full size truck. Even then, you just lose so much space. I’ve had them in Tacomas, and Raptors, so I have experience with multiple vehicles. I know you have a Power Wagon, which is large, but once the camper is on, it still feels cramped.
For what its worth I considered this as well. My buddy has a decked on his long bed tacoma with a V2 and its a perfect set up for him because his priority is for his construction business where he needs locked storage and full use of the bed day to day. What @YetiX said is spot on about the head room if the floor is not out and the main reason why I did not do it as my priority is space. Given my short 5.5 bed F150 . I also considered doing this Tacoma Interior Camper Buildout with 1/2 Decked System . Ultimately I ended up just building a single drawer out of 8020. Build thread is here 2025 F150 build . I am still working out the optimal configuration but I chose this so I would still have room for 2 peoples worth of hunting gear for 10 days of base truck camping and back country camping, packs, and full backpacking gear as well as empty coolers etc. plenty of room in this set up when you pull out the coolers and also because it is pretty easy to remove when I do want the full bed to for truck stuff. ONe other thing is that being able to have the floor in an L configuration and stand in the bed with only one of the square panels out is really great.
Thanks all for the input! Think I will pass at start, figure out how I will use mine, and then make storage decisions. Still like having a functioning bed for truck things when not camping.
This is a great idea. Truly understand your needs and access from there. A lot of people have added so much to their trucks, to never use half of it. I am one of those people. I’ve really dialed back on my builds, and not only do you save lots of money, it’s so much more gratifying. Simplicity is key in a world full of chaos. Enjoitheride ![]()

Excuse me for the messy interior. that was taken 20 days in on my SoCal - Alaska trip at Arctic Circle on Dalton Highway.
I have a Ram 1500 Rebel (DT) with the 5ft bed and I am very happy with my Decked system. It keeps the storage organized for things that I don’t need daily but are essential to carry: kitchen stuff in the left drawer and tools (1/2” impact gun, 1/2” 3/8” 1/2” sockets, wrenches, retchets, screw drivers, allen keys), air hose, fire starter, torch, tire plugs and patches in the right drawer.
I don’t have to move things around, and don’t have multiple boxes to strap down.
BUT, and this is a very big BUT! Standing on top of the Decked Drawer makes the tent floor the perfect height as a desk, so if you boil water to make coffee or work on your laptop inside the GFC, Decked drawer puts you at the most natural position to use the tent floor as a table top. AND it is less height to climb when going in and out of tent.
Especially with their new drawer system, you will have more available space than the legacy (what I have) version. 100% recommended.
I am sure it was an amazing trip! Thanks for sharing @ws6616. So the newer decked system is not as tall I take it.
I don’t think it is any shorter although I have never had an older system so I can’t verify that. I believe they just made the drawers more squared off so there is more space in the drawers.
The decked system works great for us. We have the kitchen kit in the left drawer and the camping gear and dry food in the right drawer. It allows our 3 kids to sleep on top of the decked while we sleep upstairs.
It has never hampered my daily use as a regular truck for other truck type things like hay hauling, firewood, trash that sort of thing.
I think waiting is a good idea. We had our GFC for almost a year before we got the decked. This was my family of 5 packed up for a 1 month trip from Montana to South Carolina to Maine back to Montana this last spring
they should be the same height, but they redesigned the drawers and the “ammo cans” so you get more storage space!
