Weatherizing Update

Dang! I was considering this since i have almost a whole roll leftover from my solar panel project on the gfc! Was gonna donate the rest to a buddy but now im thinking this is the key! How did it work?

Last I checked, it doesn’t appear to be leaking after sealing the rear billet joints with Lexel and correctly reinstalling the rear bulb seal that had been put too far back. So that would suggest maybe taping the entire seam is unnecessary. However, I haven’t looked recently due to snow/freezing.

So I finally finished the weatherization. Started first applying the weather seal to the extrusions, sealing the top corners and then drilling the holes in the side rails. At the time I had some water weeping out of the passenger front hinge. The water was collecting between the upper and lower silver joint pieces.

Oddly I never saw water coming out of the corner weep hole on the bottom side even when deliberately parking on a hill. I usually park on a fairly flat surface.

I couldn’t tell where the water was building up - maybe stored in the upper extrusion or center extrusion. Finally this past weekend, about 1-2 weeks after the first steps, I sealed the corners of the actual tent fabric. Had time for it to dry and apply two coats of Goo. So far so good - no weeping from that corner joint but it also hasn’t rained where I am for weeks.

Anyone else experience water coming out at the hinge?

Just wanted to give feedback to everyone on here. Build 2816 - picked it up end of January.

First heavy rain today, can confidently say after inspection the tent is bone dry! Seems the new improvements are working. Have a slight amount of water ingress from the front panel that is near the cab, will have to inspect that (just droplets on the inside of the panel, no real puddle to speak of in the bed so not too bad).

Mostly thrilled the tent is dry given I am in South Carolina and we get quite allot of rain. Hopefully can ease anyones mind who is about to pick one up :+1:

I wanna mention that the weatherstrip/bulb seal on the rear extrusion should be placed further inward from where you think it should be. The top extrusion profile is deceiving and if you just follow the inner edge, it will barely make contact with the lower extrusion. You should kinda contour the edge so it sits partially on the flat and bend upward. That will allow more contact with the seal.

The lower edge of the upper extrusion, includes the handle lip and has a similar “width” as the bottom (~1"). Because the handle lip sticks out, there is barely any overlap between the upper and lower extrusions. Hope that makes sense. I noticed that nearly all my rear bulb seal was exposed and just barely makes a seal.

I’ll grab some pics after work.

Update for anyone interested, put a service request form in on Wednesday and already heard back from GFC this morning. Sending me the weatherizing kit for the front panel and gave me all the info and instructions as well as the video.

While it is slightly inconvieneint to have to do this at home, cannot say enough for the fast customer service and getting the kit shipped as they sent a reply. Have nothing but good things to say about them from getting it installed to dealing with this.

Did a trip up to Northern California over the weekend and had quite the winter experience, snow, heavy rain, wind and cold. Not on drop of water in the tent or in the camper/topper section. @jedgar’s rain driprails worked incredibly well. The @AERONAUT quilt was oustanding in providing warmth.

My install was 2/11 and have had no intrusion of water into the tent or camper. Can’t give enough props to the GFC team.

Awesome glad to hear they helped out!

New V2 installed Feb 11.

Stoked you stayed dry and warm! :call_me_hand:

Count me as another in the midst of dealing with water intrusion. :slightly_frowning_face: I’m in Portland, OR and the PNW has been getting a ton of rain the past few days. I had a lot of water coming in to the upstairs of the camper.

Submitted a service request and GFC has been on top of it. My install was 2/5 and it looks like my camper was not fully weatherized per the kit & instructions. Which is a bit frustrating to be honest, seems like a QC checklist before campers go out the door would catch stuff like this. Like others though, I appreciate the responsiveness of GFC in working to solve the problem.

My camper has the drain holes in the extrusions but the rear roof corners on my camper are not sealed at all and the fronts don’t look like they are adequately sealed. Additionally the tent corners are not Shoe Goo’d. GFC is sending me out the sealants that are in the weatherization kit so I will seal it up when they get here and when I get a break in the rain.

Hoping for a good outcome.

So I’ve weatherized my tent and it hasn’t rained where I’m am since - it’s been maybe 2-3 months now. Today though I was turning around on the hill I live on and water came pouring out of the front of the GFC once I was sideways. It’s a fairly steep hill at 12% grade or so. I was able to get some video, I missed getting the heavy water flow on camera:

It looks like water (and a lot of it) is being held in the upper extrusion? Anyone else experience something like this? I didn’t have time to pop the tent and see if there was any intrusion inside.

Dang, that’s a lot of water in there. I haven’t seen that happen, but have only had my camper a month.

I’d want to pop the top as soon as possible and see if it got inside. My sheet & mattress were quite wet on the one side where water was coming in.

Yep did the whole weatherization process. Drilled the holes and everything. I just checked the tent and good news is it’s bone dry. I think water is trapped in the forward extrusion up top.

Great news that the interior is dry! Strange that the drain holes are not clearing that though…

have you tried this?

Just wanted to provide an update to this thread. @Tink thanks for speaking with me on the phone yesterday. It is good to hear that your tent was dry  As the video showed, water became trapped in the beams of the front hinge and as the vehicle hit a sharp incline, the water became untrapped! This is normal and why we have the drainage features that we do on the Platform Camper and RTT. In short, you can see water evacuating through the machined features along the upper extrusion in the video. For the lower hinge section, we also have a drainage feature at the bottom middle part of the extrusion.

@the_philxx per our last conversation in January, I asked for you to follow up with pictures of your upper tent corners but I never heard from you. If you do not reach out to us, then there is not much that we can do.

@rdonahe your camper does have all the production changes that we implemented in light of the Weatherization Kit. Yes, it is unfortunate that your roof caps were not sealed well, but we should have that resolved soon. Please stay in touch!

As always, we are here to help. So if you have any questions or concerns about your product, please reach out to us directly!

Unfortunately, the leaking continues. And now having left the tent closed for about three weeks, the mold has set in. So frustrating.

@GFC @GFC_Support

First, I will say, you guys have excellent customer service. As you continue to grow, please do not lose sight of this. It’s a terrible trait companies develop as they get big

Next, what is the current state of things as far as leaks go? Im set to get a camper install in June, and I am a little concerned about the leaks. I came from an Ursa Minor on my Jeep, where I had zero issues. However, I have friends who have had roof top tents that leaked, and ended up with bad mold issues, thus destroying their expensive investment. Im Just inquiring, as these units aren’t cheap, and I feel it’s okay to have legitimate concerns. Are campers going to need redesigned? Will parts need replaced in the future to solve issues? Just curious, as people don’t usually spend this type of money multiple times to upgrade.

Anyhow, thanks for being so active with the group. As someone new to this forum, I greatly value the interaction you guys set aside for us.

Cheers,

Christopher

Is this something I should look into? I just picked up my camper on Thursday (3/24). Is the weatherizing being done in advance to newer rolled out campers?
